George Orwell 16193
Bookshop Memories. With a foreword by W.E. Butler and a wood-engraving by Hilary Paynter
Arethusa Pers, 1987. Linnen band. Published in an edition of 150 numbered copies. "Bookshop Memories" is published in 1936 by the English author George Orwell. As the title suggests, it is a reminiscence of his time spent working as an assistant in a second-hand bookshop. While working in the bookshop, Orwell was working on the novel Keep the Aspidistra Flying (1936) and was able to draw on his experiences. Many commentators have pointed out that the bookshop in the novel bears little relationship to Booklover's Corner. The essay first appeared in the November 1936 issue of Fortnightly. -Wikipedia. Blair, Eric Arthur, ed. ["George Orwell"]
The Adelphi, August, 1933; October, 1933; July, 1934
London, England, The Adelphi, . First Edition. Softcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A perfectly serviceable set of three copies of The Adelphi, a leading, influential English political and literary magazine from the 1920s to the 1950s. First Editions, each, printed in London, England. Scarce in and to the trade, these issues. Complete and sturdy, bound in original publisher's printed yellow wrappers, with black lettering. Age-toning to each issue, moderate soiling of printed wraps, light rubbing to, staples slightly rusty, but clean of interior; at each issue's top the previous owner has written in pencil, "Orwell." Edited, indeed, by the inimitable Eric Arthur Blair, perhaps a bit better known by his nom-de-plume, "George Orwell." The set is comprised of issues from August, 1933; October, 1933; and July, 1934. The August, 1933 issue features works by Eric Arthur Blair (a review of Enid Starkie's "Baudelaire"), S.F. Darwin Fox, M.D. Petre, J. Middleton Murry, Kirk Bond, and "Captain Nemo," among others. The following issue, October, 1933, collects longer works by Edmund Wilson, J. Middleton Murry, Hubert Nicholson, Leonard Barnes, Hubert Murphy and J.T. Bernard, with shorter pieces by Brett Randall Swingler, Richard Goodman, Eric Arthur Blair ("Poem"), Reyner Heppenstall, and Winifred Horrabia. The July, 1934 issue presents a number of poems by lesser known poets plus longer essays and works of fiction by Malachi Whitaker, Max Plowman, John Middleton Murry, Hubert Nicholson, Jack Common, and G.S. Viner, and a review by Eric Arthur Blair of two books, one by Cooperman and one by Clapton. George Orwell's first full-length book publication, Down and Out in Paris and London, was presented across two other issues of The Adelphi, not here, being both deeply experiential and also at points fictionalized. He used "George Orwell" for his fictionalized works, though continued to use "Eric Arthur Blair" for works of reportage and journalism, reviews and the like. His Wikipedia entry notes that he signed his will "Eric Blair," the name that appears on his tombstone, too, but that his widow used "Sonia Orwell." The journal, at points The Adelphi and at others, New Adelphi, was founded by a common contributor here, John Middleton Murry, in 1923 and lasted until 1955, running sometimes as a monthly and at other times, a quarterly publication. In addition to the names above, contributors included Katherine Mansfield, A.A. Milne, D.H. Lawrence, Dylan Thomas, Jack Common, Jack Hilton, H.E. Bates and other leading lights. George Orwell enjoyed publishing success with them and contributed regularly as a reviewer, too. All in, a scarce item in a structurally sound, overall Good condition, and an important item for George Orwell completists.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
